Kade Browning and Melissa Anderson

Kade Browning (left) and his mom, Melissa Anderson have a close relationship. In this conversation, they talk about their lives, family, and relationships, especially in relation to Kade’s autism (ASD) diagnosis. When Kade was 5, his therapist suspected ASD was causing his social and regulation challenges. At 14, Kade was officially diagnosed with Level 1 ASD at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Psychiatry Department in Oregon. As a stay-at-home mom of six, Melissa helped Kade learn to adjust to neurotypical environments and advocate for himself and others. This excerpt begins with Kade and Melissa reminiscing about Kade’s early years.

This conversation was recorded April 13, 2024, at the Camas Public Library.
