Supporting Students at Washougal High School

Jay, an ECCA volunteer, tutoring students in physics.

Our partnership with Washougal High School is winding down for this year and will start up again in fall 2024. Under the CSP program, we train and supervise mentor/tutors for students in need to academic support. You don’t have to have teaching experience to be effective; your job is establish relationships and help students build the skills they need to tackle their coursework. Next year, we are particularly in need of volunteers who speak Spanish or can support students learning algebra or the hard sciences. Learn more about this program here. The volunteer application form is here. Barb Seaman is the project lead.

Trash Cleanup on SR-14 in Washougal and Camas

Volunteers working on SR-14 in Washougal in July.

We’re beginning our third year of cleaning trash from this scenic highway between Washougal and Camas — see our current cleanup schedule here. We organize about two cleanups per month in the dry season, and go out sporadically, as weather allows, in the winter. Picking up trash and junk on the road puts us downstream of the actual problem, of course. We need to reduce the trash that ends up there in the first place, and that means focusing on prevention. If you’re interested in keeping trash and plastic out of our environment and out of our waterways, or just concerned about all the liquor containers and cigarette butts regularly deposited on SR-14, join us in this policy work. Email us at eastcountycitizens@gmail.com. Melanie Wilson is the project lead for Washougal cleanups. Lynne Lyne is the lead for Camas cleanups.

Planting Wildflowers on SR-14

The planting team in November.

Our first crop of wildflowers is coming up beside Highway 14 in Washougal, and we’re preparing another large patch of ground to plant in November. That means that we need to have volunteers out there this month (May) to dig a trench and lay down solarization plastic. Can you help? Sign up here! Barb Seaman is the project lead.

Mural-Painting in Hamllik Park

Children painting on April 23 in Hamllik Park.

The first two panels of the Hamllik Park mural are painted and the neighborhood will gather again to paint on May 19. We’ve been lucky in having the expert support of several local artists! Interested in joining or even helping plan future neighborhood mural projects? Let us know. All ages and abilities welcome. Email Annie Soutter, the project lead, at eastcountycitizens@gmail.com.

Preparing and Serving Meals at ReFuel Washougal

Teens serving at our Nov. 24 dinner.

This city-run, volunteer-staffed meal program serves dinner every Friday night to community members in need. Our next dinner is November 2024. Tasks range from chopping vegetables to serving coffee and dessert. Oh, and there’s cleanup, too! It’s a fun team effort and a chance to get to know fellow volunteers and community members.
