Since 2022, ECCA has organized teams to clean SR-14 in Washougal and Camas. We do this work under state Adopt-a-Highway agreements, and to date our teams have cleaned tens of thousands of pounds of trash from this scenic road. This project not only helps keep Highway 14 cleaner, but has educated us about the kind of trash that ends up along our highways. Lumber tags, commercial plastic sheeting and strapping, fast food containers, Styrofoam, beer can and liquor bottles — we find everything imaginable, but most of it is some type of plastic. Knowing that, ECCA advocates with our city and state legislators to step up laws already on the books against littering and consider new ways to reduce the volume of trash.
In the dry months, ECCA-organized teams go out about twice a month, usually on a Saturday or Sunday. In the rainy months, our teams look for dry windows and organize less formally, sometimes just a day or two in advance.
About our teams: Each team is different, and new people can join us for any cleanup. We believe that the more community members who understand the scope of trash and plastic pollution in this delicate watershed area, the better. That’s why we actively seek to involve as many people as possible.
Sometimes people express surprise that we organize so many outings. It’s because we want clean public spaces, and this is what it takes to achieve them. Also, frankly, many of our volunteers enjoy working outside with others who care about our environment. They like making a tangible, immediate difference. In short, it’s rewarding work.
Sign up: If you are interested in going out with us, there are two ways to sign up.
- Starting in April, sign up via our 2026 Highway Trash Cleanup Schedule. It includes dates from April to November and provides a registration form. See it for details about what cleanups are like, where we meet, what you need to bring, etc.
- If it’s wintertime and scheduled cleanups are suspended, let us know you’d like to join us and we’ll let you know about impromptu winter outings. As noted, we can’t provide much advance notice for these, since they’re weather-dependent.
Leaders: Melanie Wilson leads the Washougal AAH teams. Lynne Lyne leads the Camas AAH teams. Mark Silliman heads the E. Vancouver teams.
