She faced gender discrimination early on that kept her from being her high school student body president and prevented her from applying to medical school, despite her strong academic performance. But she found inspiration from a deep moral responsibility instilled in her by her father. Even with the challenges of scoliosis and the pain of societal resistance, she served as mayor. Nan achieved her goal to leave her community better than she found it. Jen Bargar knows that for a fact.

With a degree in biology from Syracuse University, Jen set out to make a difference for the local honeybee species. When that endeavor changed her worldview, she started Nature’s Haven, a native plant nursery on six acres in Camas, WA, dedicated to the importance of planting native species to positively impact our local ecosystems. Native species support local wildlife, like butterflies and birds that rely on these plants for food and reproduction. In this conversation, Jen and her friend Molly McKay Williams take some time to imagine what a difference humans could make if we worked like bees to improve our environment.

This conversation was recorded Dec. 16, 2024.

Click here to listen to an excerpt:

Listen to their full-length conversation on the StoryCorps website

Cited books/websites

The Little Things That Run the World (The Importance and Conservation of Invertebrates) Author(s): Edward O.
